Yttrium Oxide

Short Description:

Yttrium Oxide, also known as Yttria, is an excellent mineralizing agent for spinel formation. It is an air-stable, white solid substance. It has a high melting point(2450oC), chemical stability, low coefficient of thermal expansion, high transparency for both visible (70%) and infrared (60%) light, low cut off energy of photons. It is suitable for glass, optic and ceramic applications.

What is Yttrium Oxide used for?

Yttrium Oxide is also used to make yttrium iron garnets, which are very effective microwave filters. It is also a prospective solid-state laser material. Yttrium Oxide is an important starting point for inorganic compounds. For organometallic chemistry it is converted to YCl3 in a reaction with concentrated hydrochloric acid and ammonium chloride. Yttrium oxide was used in the preparation of pervoskite type structure, YAlO3, containing chrome ions.
